Sweet and Sour Meatballs

🧆 For the Meatballs:

  • 500g (1 lb) ground beef or chicken
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

🍍 For the Sweet and Sour Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup white vinegar (or apple cider vinegar)
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup pineapple juice (from canned pineapple)
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch + 2 tbsp water (for thickening)
  • 1 small bell pepper, chopped
  • 1/2 cup pineapple chunks (optional)

👩‍🍳 Instructions:

1. Make the Meatballs:

  • In a bowl, mix all meatball ingredients together.
  • Roll into small balls (about 1 inch wide).
  • Fry in a pan with a little oil until browned on all sides, or bake at 200°C (400°F) for 15–20 minutes.

2. Make the Sauce:

  • In a saucepan, mix ketchup, vinegar, sugar, soy sauce, and pineapple juice.
  • Bring to a simmer over medium heat.
  • Add chopped bell peppers and pineapple chunks. Cook for 5 minutes.
  • Stir in cornstarch-water mixture to thicken the sauce. Cook for another 2–3 minutes.

3. Combine:

  • Add the cooked meatballs to the sauce and stir well.
  • Let simmer for 5–10 minutes so flavors blend.

Serving Suggestions:

  • Serve hot over steamed rice or noodles.
  • Garnish with chopped green onions or sesame seeds.
